Pros and Cons of Using a Gas Credit Card

As you try to determine whether or not you should apply for a gas credit card, it is helpful to explore the pros and cons of using these cards. In that way, you can be certain you are making a wise decision

Pro:  You Can Make Money with a Gas Credit Card

If you are savvy with your gas credit card, you can actually make money with it. When thinking of credit cards, most people envision a money pit that drains them of cash in the form of finance charges. If you pay your gas credit card in full each month, however, you will make money from the rewards program associated with the card.

Con: Gas Credit Cards Have High Interest Rates

As with all reward credit cards, gas credit cards have a higher interest rate than most cards without a rewards program. Therefore, if you carry a balance from month to month, you will pay more in finance charges than you receive from the rewards program.

Pro: Gas Credit Cards Often Reward More Than Just Gas Purchases

Many gas credit cards will provide you with cash back rebates for purchases beyond just gas. Some of these cards will pay you extra rewards for travel-related purchases, purchases made at restaurants and more. Some will even analyze your purchases and pay you a higher rebate based on the types of purchases you make most often. With these cards, you can actually earn money in a number of different ways.

Con: Some Gas Credit Cards Limit Where Your Gas Purchases Can Be Made

If you apply for a gas credit card that is issued through a particular gas company, you won’t earn rewards when you make purchases from a gas company other than the one on your card. This may not pose too much of a problem if you consistently purchase from the same gas company. If you prefer purchasing from the company with the lowest prices or if you regularly travel to areas with different brands of gasoline, however, getting one of these gas credit cards may be a poor choice.

Pro: You May Qualify for Additional Benefits from Gas Companies

If you do decide to apply for a gas credit card that is distributed by a particular credit card company, you may actually be able to receive additional benefits beyond the cash rebates. For example, some of these gas credit cards have points systems that allow you to redeem the points for items in their convenience stores. When comparing points to dollars, you often save more money with these points than the money you would receive in the form of a cash rewards. Therefore, if you regularly purchase items from the gas station, these extra rewards may really pay off in the long run. In addition, these gas credit cards often run specials that are only available to cardholders. By having a gas credit card with the company, you will automatically qualify for these specials.

Con: The Credit Limit on the Gas Credit Card May Be Too Low

Many gas credit cards have low credit limits when compared to other credit cards. This is particularly true with gas credit cards that are issued through specific gas stations. If you are looking for an all-purpose credit card that will allow you to make all of your regular monthly purchases, the lower credit limit may not be enough to fulfill your needs.

By weighing the pros and cons of gas credit cards and by taking the time to find the one with benefits that best suit your needs, you can determine whether or not getting one of these cards is a good decision for you.
