Is a Gas Credit Card Right for You?
Everyone is feeling the strain associated with continuously increasing gas prices. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that more and more gas credit cards are becoming available. These gas credit cards make great promises of rewards for gas purchases and may even provide you with discounts on gas purchases, but is a gas credit card really right for you?
Do You Carry a Balance from Month to Month?
If you carry a balance on your credit cards from month to month, a gas credit card probably isn’t right for you. Like all rewards credit cards, gas credit cards tend to have a higher interest rate. This means you will pay even more in finance charges if you make purchases with your gas credit card. If you aren’t currently in a financial situation that will allow you to pay off your balances in full, you are probably better off with a credit card with a low interest rate. Or, you may be able to use a gas credit card for purchases that you are able to pay at the end of the billing cycle.
If you don’t have a very long commute and, consequently, do not spend a great deal of money on gas each month, you might not be the best candidate for a gas credit card. Rather than getting a card that focuses on rewarding gas purchases, you might want to apply for a credit card that awards you for the type of purchases you make the most often. For example, if you spend a great deal of money on office supplies or on airline tickets, you might be better served with a card specializing in those areas rather than with a gas credit card.
Do You Regularly Purchase Gas from the Same Company?
Many gas credit cards are issued through specific gas companies. This means you will only receive the special gas rebate when you make purchases from these companies. If you do not frequently use that specific gas company, applying for one of their gas credit cards doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Rather, you might be better served with a gas credit card that allows you to purchase gasoline from any station you like. These gas credit cards can sometimes be more difficult to acquire, however, and may not provide you with very high rewards.
Do You Have the Time to Take Full Advantage of the Gas Credit Card?
In order to get the most out of a gas credit card, you need to put in a little effort. For example, while some gas credit cards will automatically credit your account after you have earned rewards, many will require you to call customer service or to otherwise request your earned rewards. This can be a bit of a hassle and, if you aren’t willing to jump through the hoops, using a gas credit card may be a waste of time.
In addition to taking time to request your rewards, gas credit cards can be a hassle in other ways as well. For example, in order to get the most out of the card, you need to make sure to make purchases from merchants that qualify for rebates. In addition, you may need to juggle more than one rewards credit card in order to get the most money back because many gas credit cards have caps on how much you can earn or on how many purchases qualify for a higher rebate rate.
If used wisely, a
gas credit card can be right for just anyone. Just be certain you are willing to put in the effort to research and find the right gas credit card and use it wisely so you can get the most out of your card.
