Credit Cards for Minors
Credit card companies have always seen the potential consumer, which means they find a new idea and then they run with it. The latest ideas from many credit card companies have been the credit cards for minors. These credit cards for minors are going to require a few restrictions and be more like ATM cards in most cases. You see since the person obtaining the card is a minor they are required to have a co- signer. They are also going to have a lower credit limit and higher interest rate for the regular style card. While the credit card companies realize the risk they are undertaking they are going to offer themselves a way to be protected. Let’s look at the credit cards for minors versus adults.
An adult has an easier time getting a credit card. They just need to show proof of income, personal information and of course the company will look at the credit history and scores. So when this information is given the credit card company reviews it and determines risk. The amount of risk will determine the actual interest rate and credit limit of the card. If you have poor enough credit you may be declined or find it a little more difficult to get a credit card, but never impossible.
For minors getting a credit card is more of a challenge. First of all the minor must convince their parents they can handle the responsibility. Then the parents must be able to co- sign on the account. In most cases the credit cards for minors are going to look at the parent’s income and accounts to determine that they will be able to pay the card off if there is any issue.
The credit cards for minors are going to be a little different as well. The cards are actually based on their GPA for most of the rewards. In other words if the GPA falls then the student will not get rewards or discounts. So the incentive to do well is always going to be there from the credit card as well as the parents.
If you want more control of the spending of your teen then you might as the parent want to seek the prepaid credit cards. These cards offer you the balance that you want. You see the card is like an ATM card where you must submit money to the account before it can be used and when there isn’t money in the account the minor will not be able to use it. This allows you to see how much the minor is using and keep yourself more protected. With regular cards the credit limit can increase and often does. If you are not prepared for that increase or want that increase then your best bet will be these prepaid cards. They are not without their fees though, so be careful when choosing the cards. Make sure that you research the credit cards for minors that are on the market before applying.
